This has caused a lot of confusion and unknowns within the automotive refrigerant industry. Auto manufacturers all over the world have begun to switch their new models over to yf.
In fact since the pace of vehicles beings switched over has grown and grown. The question now is when will a be phased down within the United States? Regardless of what happens with these phase outs and phase downs I can be sure of one thing. Ra is going to be around for a long time. Even if we switch over our new vehicles today there will still be vehicles manufactured last year that will be on the road twenty or thirty years from now.
After all, there are still R vehicles out there, right? We now need to move towards alternative refrigerants like yf or R How Do Refrigerants Work? Chemistry: Production by reacting Trichloroethylene with Hydrogen Fluoride. Prediction of Application: Automotive: Light duty, medium duty and heavy duty. Critical Temperature: Require Certification to Purchase? Yes, certification required by January 1st, Where to Buy Can or Cylinder?
As a replacement product Ra was introduced into the automotive market in It is amazing just how much Ra a dealership can go through. Along with the automotive industry you can find Ra in various heat pump applications and other commercial refrigeration needs. Ra is also used in quite a few refrigerant blends as well as a key ingredient.
Most refrigerants and refrigerant applications are left to professionals. Sure, there are some do-it-yourselfers out there, but for the most part technicians handle the repairs. The exception to this is Ra and automotive applications.
Many people enjoy working on their vehicle and buying a few cans of Ra and repairing your air conditioning system is no big deal to them. This is a rare exception within the refrigerant industry. This regulation prevented Ra cylinder sales to people who are NOT certified. Do-it-yourselfers can still buy individual pound cans but they are restricted are larger purchases. You can go down to the local auto parts store today or on Ebay and purchase some cans without any issues.
The European Union has already phased out Ra on any new vehicle models. Most car manufacturers have switched to the alternative HFO refrigerant known as yf.
The plan for the United States was to phase out a on new vehicles by the year , but this regulation was delayed due to Federal court rulings. Ra is ending and ending soon even here in the United States.
A few years back a law-suit was started with the International Trade Commission. The suit claimed that China was dumping low-priced Ra into the US market which locally based companies were not able to compete with.
In order to resolve this issue anti-dumping tariffs were issued against Chinese Ra. The issuing of these tariffs caused the national price of Ra to jump nearly twenty dollars for a thirty pound cylinder. Since these tariffs were issued the price point for Ra has stayed relatively stable over the past few years.
I write this in summer of In another ten or fifteen years Ra applications will be a rarity or seen as an antique. While the new HFOyf may not be the perfect solution it IS the refrigerant that all of the vehicle manufacturers are running to. As you know, R was the default for automotive air conditioning for decades but in the s it was discovered that R was harming the Ozone layer. Because of this, R was phased out across the world and was replaced by Ra.
What is Ra? Ra is an HFC refrigerant that is intended to be used in automotive applications. It was designed to replace R Once we have identified the service port we can now start the engine of your vehicle and turn on the air conditioner.
Ensure that the air conditioner is powered on to maximum cool and maximum blowing capacity. With the vehicle on then connect the coupler on your recharge kit to the low side service port that we identified in the first step. The coupler should snap and lock into place. You may need to pull back the collar to connect the coupler. If you find that the coupler is not fitting onto your low side service port then stop! This could be a few things. The first and most likely is that you are trying to put it on the high pressure port instead of the low pressure.
A secondary scenario could be you have a newer car model you may in fact be using the new yf refrigerant. If this is the case then you will need to visit a dealership as there are not recharge kits out there yet for yf. Once this is done you can now check the pressure gauge. Please note that it is critical that your compressor be running in order to check the pressure.
You should be able to see the pulley of the compressor spinning if it is working correctly. If your compressor is not coming on then either there is no refrigerant left in your system or the compressor may be faulty. Cold Side. Equipment Shutdown Procedures.

These applications include: Use in vending machines manufactured on or after January 1st, Use in new medium-temp, stand-alone units containing a flooded evaporator that was manufactured on or before January 1st, Use in medium-temp, stand-alone units with a compressor capacity of 2, Btuh or greater Use in new medium-temp, stand-alone units that have a compressor capacity below 2, Btuh that do not contain a flooded evaporator that was manufactured on or after January 1st, Additionally, Ra is not compatible with organic mineral oil, which makes HFCs insoluble, making Ra unusable in certain units and refrigeration systems.
