This recommendation is in response to the fact that there has been a decline in enrollments and admissions applications at Fern Valley University for the last few years.
The department feels that the reason for this decline is that some students have been dissatisfied with the quality of teaching and library facilities at the school. The goal is mainly to halt the declining number of students and admissions by addressing these two issues. While the suggestion seems valid initially, a deeper investigation reveals that key facts are missing and important questions are unanswered, leaving the claim dubious. To begin with, the department recommends that to remedy the declining number of students, the university should expand the range of subjects and improve library facilities.
While both tasks are important and admirable goals in general, the department's reason for these goals is that students expressed dissatisfaction with the teaching and library facilities.
Two questions beg to be answered before this suggestion can be evaluated. Are the students who cite dissatisfaction representative of all the students in general? If they are not, this move will not necessarily help to increase the number of students because it would appear that some other factor is responsible for the declining number. Before you are ready to write the essay, you will need to be able to generate ideas.
If you follow a set pattern, it will become simple to come up with substantive analysis. Using our three-step pattern, you will be able to efficiently and effectively identify and verbalize solid analysis. The AWA is scored in such a way that it is possible to have a basic template in mind which can later be fleshed out with relevant details from the provided prompt.
Having this prepared will help you not only write a convincing essay, but will also help you to focus the specific details you are pulling from the prompt. We recommend that you plan your ideas in a brief outline during the 30 minutes provided. Memorizing your own version of the example template below will help you to organize your ideas and take some of the pressure off. Prepare for the AWA Essay. Find a flaw — familiarize yourself with common logical fallacies used in arguments to help you quickly identify places where the text asserts something without sufficient evidence.
Identify its underlying assumption — ask yourself, what assumptions is the author making given the details and evidence he or she has provided thusfar? In this case, feel free to use the conclusion outline from the first sample template, and make your third body paragraph devoted to improvements instead. In writing your own essays, you may find that one of the templates given above works best for you, or you may find it more effective to combine different elements of each.
The most important thing is to formulate and practice with a set GMAT essay template well before you take the real test. Try each template out as is excluding my sentence stems on a different essay prompt. Alternatively, it easier to just go flaw-by-flaw, including a suggestion to mitigate each if you can come up with one in each body paragraph, and having a shorter conclusion instead? Are there any turns of phrases that were particularly clever, that you might want to reuse on other essays?
In short, everything you write has to be your own words, but they can be your own words that you yourself came up with beforehand. And there are some key advantages to doing a bit of pre-writing beforehand: that way, you can just plug in the specific details from the prompt. So, in your essay, you might focus mostly on what else you would need to evaluate the argument—like all the different kinds of reasoning and evidence that the author would need to further support this conclusion. And you should be comfortable with your template and the plan-of-attack baked into it well before test day.
Practice using your template on a wide array of GMAT prompts, not just ones that deal with plans-of-actions for corporate, which are the most common. Writing more than six essays is likely overkill, but going through four to five practice essays on a variety of different topics will help you test out your GMAT writing template and ensure a top score on the real thing.
